TANGENTIAL
This piece is based on the idea of tangents. The music contains steady patterns that veer off into alternating rhythmic divisions.
This piece was initially conceived as a piece of electronic music. My friends at Sample Logic were releasing a new sample library called Morphestra II and they asked if I would write a piece to showcase the hybrid electronic/acoustic sounds of their sample library. I wrote a piece titled Crooked Lines, and it was based on this idea of patterns diverging. I developed this idea and arranged the piece for piano quintet for my album Frameworks.
One of my favorite things about this piece is the look of the score. You can really get a sense of the sound of the music, even if you don’t read music notation! See the score in the video below unfold as you listen to the music.
